Eye-Bank Technician (Illinois Eye-Bank, Chicago)
This position is responsible for lab-related aspects of eye/tissue donations (e.g., recovery, tissue receipt, tissue processing, evaluation and donor eligibility determination). Performs laboratory duties and assignments as required in compliance with Midwest Eye-Banks and EBAA Medical Standards and with state and federal regulations.

Major Position Duties and Responsibilities
1. Perform laboratory duties including performing donor follow-up, scheduling surgery,
proper documentation, data entry, packaging and shipping tissue and supplies, etc.
2. Perform technical procedures (eye enucleation, in situ corneal excision, preservation, etc.). Verify the effectiveness and appropriateness of donor recovery sites.
3. Evaluate and preserve eye tissue.
4. Screen medical/social/behavioral history including chart review, if necessary.
5. Observe strict confidentiality of donor and recipient information at all times.
6. Complete assignments (environmental cleaning and monitoring, supply receipt and storage, QA, stats, etc.) as required.
7. Weekend coverage and On-call schedule as assigned.
8. Participate in public and professional education about donation as needed and maintain professional relationships with hospital staff, physicians and other agencies.
9. Assist in training of new field technicians as assigned.
10. Assume responsibility for teamwork and problem solving in support of the missions and goals of the Midwest Eye-Banks.
11. Perform other duties as assigned.

Background Required
BS degree or RN, BSN preferred. Good communication skills with ability to interact
professionally with peers and healthcare personnel. Ability to follow through with assignments.

Special Employment Requirements
Certification in enucleation and corneal excision after appropriate training. Eligibility for EBAA technician certification will be determined on an individual basis. Proficiency in slit lamp and specular microscopy evaluation of tissue and use of other laboratory equipment after appropriate training. A valid driver’s license and use of own vehicle is required.
